Herbs to Support Cancer Therapy

Unfortunately many of us personally know, or are ourselves, someone who is currently going through cancer therapy, whether it be chemotherapy, radiation or surgery. Whilst these treatments can help, they also have some seriously debilitating side effects. Thankfully, there are some herbs that can help alleviate the side effects and also help protect the body from them, whilst also boosting our immune systems and nourishing the cells of the body.

**Please note: These herbs are not a cure for cancer, but instead help support the body and alleviate side effects.  Also always consult your health professional before taking them in case of contraindications.

Codonopsis, also known as Dang Shen, is an adaptogenic herb that has been shown to protect the body from radiation and is effective at protecting cancer patients from the side effects of radiation without diminishing the radiation benefits. Codonopsis is also excellent for building muscle and relieving chronic fatigue.

Agaricus Mushroom (Agaricus blazei murrill) has been used as adjunct nutritional therapy for patients with cancer in Japan, Europe, Brazil and other Asian countries. Agaricus is a powerful immune boosting herb containing polysaccharides and Ergosterol (a natural anti-angiogenesis substance that has been shown to inhibit the production of substances that originate in tumours). These two constituents help stimulate neogenesis of the capillaries which in turn, inhibits the growth of the tumour through the circulatory system and decreases its size meaning cancer therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation can be more effective.

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus) has been shown to help reinvigorate those undertaking chemotherapy and aid their recovery, especially those with extreme fatigue. It also helps to protect white blood cells from destructive radiation.

Turkey Tail (Coriolus versicolor) mushroom contains two major polysaccharides that have been to shown boost immune cell production and alleviate chemotherapy sysmptoms. They are known as PSK (polysaccharide-K) and PSP (polysaccharide-P) and in double-blind trials were shown to significantly improve quality of life, provide substantial pain relief and enhance immune status in 70-97% of patients with cancer of the stomach, esophagus, lung, ovaries and cervix.

Shiitake mushroom (Lentinus edodes) is also used in many countries as a complementary supplement to cancer therapies and contains many vitamins, minerals, polysaccharides, fibre and protein.

Maitake mushrooms (Grifola frondosa) help detoxify carcinogens, promote natural killer cells (NK) and energise the cellular immune system, making it a great support for patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation. It also helps relieve side effects of chemotherapy and provides nutritional support.

These herbs may be a valuable support for you or a loved one and are also excellent tonic herbs to continue to take after treatment has stopped.
